PRESS RELEASE

The signing ceremony for the Grant Assistance for the Grass-roots Human Security Project(GGP) entitled “The Project for Construction of Skill Training Center for Vulnerable Youth” took place March 29, at Gilbert Agricultural and Rural Development Center (GARDC), St Peter, Antigua. GARDC received a Grant of up to US$ 89,075 from the Government of Japan for the construction of a new Skill Training Center which accommodates 2 rooms. One room will be a new computer lab where students can learn basic and advanced IT skills and the other will be a class room which will provide a great variety of training.

The ceremony was attended by Mr. Masanobu Yoshii, Counsellor, Embassy of Japan, and Mrs. Roberta Williams, Executive Director, GARDC. Approximately forty-five (45) guests were also in attendance.

Counsellor Yoshii gave a speech at the ceremony, in which he stated that the scheme of GGP is being introduced to Antigua and Barbuda as a result of the Second Japan-Caricom Ministerial-level Conference, Tokyo, September 2010, and this project represents the second GGP in Antigua. He hoped that, through this project, the GARDC can increase their capacity, which will enable them to more effectively provide a wide range of training courses to the vulnerable members of the young generation. The young generation has the power to push forward great advancement in our future, and in this regard, he praised the GARDC for its strong support of vulnerable youths.

Attached are pictures of the ceremony which may be resized and distributed.

The Government of Japan welcomes further opportunities to work with the Government and the people of Antigua and Barbuda, all with a view to strengthening the bonds of friendship and mutual understanding which exist between the two countries.
